Welcome Food Less Travelled... Fresh Is Best We believe that food that has travelled fewer miles tastes better, and that is why we specialise in Local and British Produce. No matter what the product is we will always look for the local producer first. If we cant get it locally then we buy British. For those things that we cant get locally or from a British producer, we use local importers - for example our olives are from Bristol and our dried fruits from Bridgwater. Whichever way we work we always support the local economy if we can. Money spent on locally produced food generates almost twice as much for the local economy as money spent in the supermarket. It stays in the vicinity where its value increases as it is invested many times over. By buying local or British, you can cut down on the amount of preservatives and chemicals used in production to maintain stock quality in transit, youre also far more likely to benefit from important vitamins and minerals, which begin to diminish once picked. Although many of our goods from our local producers are not certified organic they are grown to organic standards - small producers cannot justify the cost of organic certification, which can run to thousands of pounds per year. Many also feel aggrieved that they should have to pay for the privilege of certification, when they have worked in the same organic manner for generations. Did you also know that the vast majority of organic produce, particularly fruit, is produced overseas? So even when you buy a lot of certified organic produce in the supermarket, it has travelled so far to get to you that the benefit of its organic status has been lost. An apple from New Zealand will have travelled 11,500 miles to reach your shopping basket. The majority of the apples we sell are grown down the road in Somerset! The choice is yours. |
